100: Using Technology to Increase Conceptual Understanding in Algebra and Geometry
Many topics in algebra and geometry are difficult to address conceptually and tend to be taught procedurally. We’ll explore interactive applets that let students “notice and wonder,” talk about mathematical situations, and develop conceptual understandings of triangle properties, linear equations, systems of equations, and factoring trinomials.

202: What is Academic Rigor in the Primary Classroom?
The subject of rigor brings up lots of questions that need to be examined. What makes a task rigorous? Is harder always better? How do we know when struggling with a task will lead to understanding and when it will not? We will look at what we need to consider to provide rigorous, yet appropriate, tasks for young children.

300: Teaching Mathematics: Reflections and Insights on >1000 Classroom Observations
I have been blessed with an ever growing data base of more than 1000 K–12 mathematics classroom observations since 2010. This session is an opportunity to capture and share some of what I've observed and learned. We will use specific examples to look at such issues as on-going cumulative review, homework, worksheets, saying vs. showing, formative assessment, questioning, and tasks that either numb or energize our neurons—all of which can be transported to every classroom in which mathematics is taught.

302: Conferring and Questioning to Spark Deeper Understanding
Questioning has become one of the biggest challenges of teachers everywhere as they rise to the challenge of transforming their classrooms into communities of mathematicians. The CCSS Standards of Mathematical Practice require that children engage in problem solving with tenacity and confidence and that teachers foster a climate conducive to the generating of mathematics rather than the explanation of it. Teachers have been told that they have a new role—one of a facilitator, rather than a teller. But being a facilitator is not sufficient; we are also mentors. Precisely how to question in ways that engage learners to go deeper into the mathematics at hand will be the focus of this presentation. Digital video will be used to study it in action and participants will leave with a “Landscape of Teacher Change on Conferring and Questioning” to monitor their own growth and development.

400: Facilitating Meaningful Discourse in Mathematics Classroom
According to Principles to Action, mathematical discourse should: build on and honor students’ thinking; provide students with the opportunity to share ideas, clarify understandings, and develop convincing arguments; and advance the mathematical learning of the whole class. It has been argued that “discussions that focus on cognitively challenging mathematical tasks, namely those that promote thinking, reasoning, and problem solving, are a primary mechanism for promoting conceptual understanding of mathematics.“ During the session participants will: 1) watch a video clip and discuss what the teacher does to support her students engagement in and understanding of mathematics; 2) discuss how the video exemplifies the focal teaching practice; and 3) consider what can be learned from this example that could apply to teaching more broadly.

402: Letting Go: Cultivating Agency and Authority in the Secondary Mathematics Classroom
In this session, I share what I learned from my dissertation video study of two high school teachers who were learning to enact Number Talks. I wanted to learn what the teachers found most challenging and how coaching supported their learning. In examining the videos of the Number Talks, I noticed that, even when teachers use teaching strategies that are recommended for engaging students in productive mathematical discussions, it can be hard to let go of familiar practices that we think of as "teaching" (such as asking leading questions or verifying students' answers), but that when we are able to forego those habits, students' agency and authority has more space to grow. I hope these ideas will be useful for teachers and coaches alike.

600: Adding Talk to the Leadership Teaching and Math Equation
How do adult interactions in school impact student interactions in schools? What do robust academic discussions sound like among teachers and among students? How do we cultivate rich, engaging inquiries at the administrative and the teacher and the student levels in any given school or district? How do we address problems in school and how do those habits impact how we engage with mathematics problems? What does culture have to do with learning and how do we cultivate the culture we all want to live in? In this talk I will share my thinking about how to develop the kind of dialogue needed to actually improve learning. We will explore "learning communities" and the role of each player in the community to both learn and contribute to the collective and individual knowledge in the community. What habits of discourse need to be cultivated so that all of us, no matter age or rank, can engage productively in dialogue that furthers learning, innovation, problem solving, and collaboration?
