400: Facilitating Meaningful Discourse in Mathematics Classroom

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

According to Principles to Action, mathematical discourse should: build on and honor students’ thinking; provide students with the opportunity to share ideas, clarify understandings, and develop convincing arguments; and advance the mathematical learning of the whole class. It has been argued that “discussions that focus on cognitively challenging mathematical tasks, namely those that promote thinking, reasoning, and problem solving, are a primary mechanism for promoting conceptual understanding of mathematics.“ During the session participants will: 1) watch a video clip and discuss what the teacher does to support her students engagement in and understanding of mathematics; 2) discuss how the video exemplifies the focal teaching practice; and 3) consider what can be learned from this example that could apply to teaching more broadly.
